Ubon Ratchathani, or 'Ubon' as it is most often called, was founded in the late 1700s by immigrants from Laos who were supported in the move by the newly established Kingdom of Siam. The city is home to a major Royal Thai Air Force Base, which was used by US forces during the Vietnam war. Today the city's attractions include Wat Tung Sri Muang, and Wat Nong Bua. Wat Nong Bua features a chedi modelled on that at Bodh Gaya. Ubon is best known for the annual Candle Festival, held in July.
