Nong Khai is a city in northern Isaan on the Thai - Lao border near the Laotian capital of Vientiane. Originally people had to cross over to Laos by boat, but the building of the Friendship Bridge (a gift from Australia) across the Mekong made Nong Khai a major transport and trade gateway to Laos. It is a common destination for those making visa runs to Laos.
